Avanti’s Suvisoitto Festival Celebrates its 40th Anniversary
The opening concert on Wednesday, June 25th will begin with Kaija Saariaho’s Forty Heartbeats, which premiered at the 1998 Suvisoitto. The piece is dedicated to Esa-Pekka Salonen and Magnus Lindberg in honor of their 40th birthdays. As the featured solo performance, Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. After intermission, the program continues with Polar Pearls (2023) by Outi Tarkiainen and Chamber Symphony (2021) by Sebastian Fagerlund. The opening concert at the Taidetehdas will be conducted by maestro John Storgårds.
The theme for Suvisoitto 2025 is “Light within Light.” Fagerlund explains the concept:
“Suvisoitto 2025’s theme is ‘Light within Light’. The title refers to an abstract idea of musical expression, communication, and emotion as light that travels through centuries, returning in various forms as it renews, transforms, and branches out. In addition to my own music, I’ve selected composers and works for the festival that create fertile dialogues and meanings, in which the intellectual and emotional, joy and sorrow, internal and external worlds encounter and intertwine in diverse ways.” — Sebastian Fagerlund
